Pinterest Place Pins bring location marketing and visual storytelling together

Pinterest introduced a new type of rich pin called Place Pins Wednesday, giving users the ability to map the locations of items they share on their boards.

Commonly used as a destination for aspirational collection, collaboration, and content discovery, people Pin about 1.5 million places daily, amounting to more than 750 million Pins tagged with location.

For anyone in the travel/hospitality industry Place Pins turn Pinterest into a supercharged branded travel magazine of sorts, combining the best features of Foursquare and Instagram into a package that’s easily shared and consumed.

Place Pins also include information like the address and phone number of a place right on the Pin.

To create a map of pins simply choose ‘Add a map’ when you create a new board or edit an existing board’s settings to add a map.

You can also create and collaborate with others thanks to group boards. I can imagine that planning a weekend-long wine tour with your friends just got a lot more enjoyable.

As more and more brands rely on visual storytelling to create personalized and valuable content experiences for their customers, features like Place Pins give marketers the ability to bring content to life in fresh and exciting way while still taking advantage of their presence on other social sites.

Location, Location, Location
Real estate firm The Corcoran Group has already been using Pinterest extensively to connect with their customers aspirational lifestyle, and Matthew Shadbolt, Director of Interactive Product & Marketing, believes new Place Pins will become very valuable to their ability to create exciting local content for their community.

“Helping our customers discover New York and answer the question ‘What does it feel like to live here?’ is a critical aspect of Corcoran’s digital positioning. Guiding our users through the best spots around town, and those venues that only locals would know reflects how our agents have always worked with home buyers.

This insight and guidance is a key driver of happiness related to the idea of home. When you’re in the ‘location, location, location’ business, being able to visualize distance and local insights in clear, easy to understand and fun ways becomes incredibly valuable.”

The Corcoran Group has already started putting together some of their own experiences around their favorite food, where to be social in NYC in the Fall, and this fully loaded map of The Corcoran Group’s Foursquare tips left at various places around the city, each complete with their own custom image.

Pinterest themselves rolled out the new feature with a number of great boards curated from some of the most popular pinners in the travel/food world including A Chicago Pork & Whiskey Tour from Thrillist, America’s Best Hot Chocolate from Fodor’s, Loved by Parisians from Airbnb, and Great American BBQ from Andrew Zimmern.
