Nearly one in every five internet users is on Twitter [REPORT]

A new study from Pew Research Center shows that roughly 1 in 5 adults (or about 18% of all active internet users) are on Twitter, with 72% of users in general active on some form of social media.

This 72% shows that social media networks continue to evolve and mature with users. In just 12 years, the use of social networks has increased 800% from when Pew first started surveying about social media in 2005.

From the graph you can see that this notion of “social networking” experienced explosive growth up until around 2010, when you social networks (arguably) reached the collective conscious and a more widespread adoption. Today’s top four social networking sites are Facebook, Google+, Youtube, and Twitter, with Twitter increasingly becoming a top choice for just about every demographic.

Other results from the study find that younger demographics remain the most likely to use and engage with social media as an activity with 89% of 18-29 year olds online. Perhaps even more surprising is that adoption rates of social networking by those 65 and older have tripled in the last four years from 13% in the spring of 2009 to 43% on social networking sites this year.
