Labour of love: How an upholsterer, BizNews Conference goers aided in maintaining one of SA’s national treasures

As we draw nearer to the second BizNews Investment Conference, we’re reminded of the thought-provoking conversation, rational perspectives and insightful viewpoints that were shared with the delegates.

Of course, merriment was very much a part of the Conference, too. While golf, wine appreciation and spa days soothed the brow of BizNews guests and conference attendees, entertainment in the form of the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir was an aural treat for everyone.

Seated in the Ken Mackenzie Auditorium, delegates were dazzled by the sheer talent of the Boys Choir. At dinner, however, one guest simply could not shake the poor condition of the auditorium. Pledge an amount towards a project to restore the tired auditorium chairs, other guests soon followed suit – with an astonishing R152,000 raised.

Venue for the BizNews Investment Conference, Champagne Sports Resort was tasked with managing and undertaking the exciting project. Drawing on past experience, quotes were obtained from three suppliers. Soon, however, an issue arose – despite the generous amount raised, the R152,000 would cover just 60% of the 600 seats.

A request was put in, with Michael Coetzee of Fabtec snapping up the opportunity to assist one of South Africa’s national treasures. Based in Benoni, Fabtec specialises as an auto trimmer for motor vehicles, bikes and trucks – also offering repairs to furniture.

The company, which says it has set itself apart from competitors through “excellent service”, certainly lived up to its slogan. Coetzee agreed to carry the cost of labour, ensuring that the upholstery project can be completed. What’s more, Fabtec’s talented good samaritan also collected and delivered the chairs to the Drakensberg, eliminating expensive travel costs.
